Latvia’s exposition at the Venice Biennale offers a view of the absurd and the utopian - a beach created under asphalt, irritating the visitor’s perception on several levels and playing with associative elements rich in metaphors, allowing one to view everyday things from an extraordinary angle. The asphalt, which we feel under our feet every day, has been exploded and hung from the ceiling of the Arsenal building. The low frequency loudspeakers hidden behind the asphalt plane play typical street vibrations. Under it all lies a beach - a broad, white space, which associatively puts one in mind of the image of a bright sunny day and allows one to perceive the tranquillity that we seek from day to day as we set out for the seaside.
